I have been working on developing my emotional intelligence skills and I find that to be quite challenging. I think of it like being in a pool and everyone is walking in the same direction long enough that it creates a whirlpool with a very strong current that you can literally just ride the current. This is what I feel that I have been doing; just riding the current without thought up until this point in my life. But, for me to develop emotional intelligence, I must stand up, turn around, and start walking in the opposite direction of the current. Anyone ever try it? It isn’t easy. The current tries to pull you back into its direction, the water and it’s force is moving against you.
I have always been an over emotional type of person. My emotions rule over my actions. As I started the process of developing emotional intelligence, I, at times, felt (and still sometimes feel) like I get pulled under the current and I am drowning and can no longer maintain my footing. The emotions can be so intense that I have no clue how I will ever manage to get through such a strong emotion without breaking down or repressing it.
I can identify the feeling that I am having, but creating space for that feeling…that’s another story. How do you create space for a feeling? Distraction? Ha! I am an over thinker. I think about things from every angle and dissect every aspect. I am learning that if I journal and do some free writing during these emotional events, I tend to loosen the grip that the feeling has on me.
This is something that I have to work on daily. I check in with myself and see how I am feeling. I also check in on my thoughts, the random ones, to see how I am talking to myself. This helps me gage what over all mood I am in. This is a daily practice that will take me a very long time to master. I am not even sure if mastery is possible, but I will accept manage for now.
